Lay a short 2 x 4 or beater block on top of the tiles and tap lightly with a rubber mallet to level the tiles and bed them firmly in the mortar. Finish each grid before moving to the next. This also helps to set the tile in the mortar. Place spacers between the tiles to establish the grout lines.

Lay the first tile square at the crossing of the reference lines. Begin installing tiles in the center of the room one grid at a time. Cut tiles to fit against the wall if necessary. Be prepared to cut some tiles.
